Discovering and learning magic
Planned feature
Discover spells through survival activities, then learn them at the Spell Bench.
Discovery is personal
Magic begins with things you do in ordinary survival: crafting a torch, blocking with a shield or finding an ingredient. A discovery is not the same as owning the finished object. Buying a cauldron does not replace personally crafting one for Mutavelle. Lumos discovery is intended to announce itself with an achievement-style popup and public chat.
After discovering a spell, learn it at the Spell Bench once you know its required earlier spells and have its study materials. Initial learning is instant, with no research timer, separate tree points or permanent class lock. The six disciplines are Charms, Defense, Transfiguration, Herbology, Potions and Curses/Countercurses.
What study consumes
Lumos and Mutavelle have no initial XP-level cost. Their materials are one charcoal and one copper ingot respectively. Other entry spells have the direct ingredients listed below. A shield involved in a discovery is not automatically consumed; Protego’s shield is an explicitly listed study input.
| Entry | Study material |
|---|---|
| Lumos | 1 charcoal |
| Mutavelle | 1 copper ingot |
| Accio | 1 iron ingot |
| Protego | 1 shield |
| Episkey | 1 honey ingredient |
| Aguamenti | 1 water bottle |
| Incendio | 1 coal |
| Stupefy | 1 bone |
| Glacius | 1 control essence |
Later study and upgrades
Intermediate learning uses one prepared plant from the discipline family; advanced learning uses one matching essence. Charms and Defense use binding, Herbology growth, Potions heat, and Transfiguration and Curses control. Ritual nodes use their ritual instead. The complete per-spell assignment of these tiers and exact prepared materials is not yet specified. Glacius is an explicit exception with its one-control-essence study input.
Upgrade purchases spend displayed vanilla XP levels plus materials, not Mal-Coins or character points. The intended defaults are early: 3 levels and one prepared ingredient; intermediate: 6 levels and matching essence; advanced: 10 levels and a refined component. The exact per-spell tier/material list remains incomplete, so an upgrade direction is not an additional completed recipe. The confirmation should show the materials and resulting level before you pay.
Spell specializations
Entries can grow from base to improved to specialized applications. At most one specialization is active per spell. Changing one costs a small material payment, but the exact materials are not specified yet. There is no requirement to spam an unhelpful spell to fill a second experience bar.
Personal knowledge, possession of an item and permission to use a station are separate. An authorized shared Infusion Stand lets an expert work there; it does not lend that expert’s knowledge to everyone else.
